WHAT IS IT WE NEED?

Background

  • The Lochee Boys and Girls Club is a voluntary and community-led boxing club, and we seek to raise awareness, support and financial backing for our campaign to build an extension to existing premises in order to meet growing participation demand.
  • The charitable club has served Lochee, Menzieshill, Dryburgh and surrounding areas since its formation in 1946.
  • The dedicated coaches and volunteers have ensured the young people of the area have had an inclusive and welcoming environment to hone and showcase their talents for generations.
  • The club, which has produced multiple Scottish champions, as well as Commonwealth Gold Medalist and now professional boxer, Sam Hickey, has now exceeded capacity, with demand still growing.

We have been in a position that we were having to turn people away from attending the club due to the overwhelming numbers wishing to take part in what we do.  We do not only train people to box, our coaches and volunteers are pillars of support, discipline and community.  Our club offers young people a safe place to learn discipline, respect and resilience and we play a critical role in preventing crime and nurturing youth.  We provide more than physical training, we offer purpose, mentorship and a sense of belonging.

We want to provide a service to our community and to meet the need and demand we need to expand our premises.  We have been recruiting and training more volunteer coaches and now we just need the space!

The Extension Project

HELP SO FAR

  • Heart of Lochee’ is a short documentary film telling the story of the Lochee Boys & Girls Club, a voluntary and community-led boxing club, as it seeks to raise awareness, support and financial backing for its campaign to build an extension to existing premises in order to meet growing participation demand.

  • Now two Dundee institutions are combining to bring the ‘Heart of Lochee’ and its message to the big screen.
  • Created by renowned local film maker, Scotty Dee, and funded by local businessman, Mike Garty, the film will screen on a showcase basis in the DCA in front of an audience of Lochee Boys & girls – old and young. It is hoped that the awareness campaign will encourage wider funding participation and shine a light on the work of the club’s volunteers and young people over many years.
  • The event will also see a revelation of architectural plans for the accommodation of increased gym & community use space.
  • Venue: DCA, 30th November, 11am.

“The ‘Heart of Lochee’ is fantastic and articulates our message perfectly. We’re truly grateful to Scott & Mike for their support with this. The challenges of the area are well documented and don’t need our further comment. But it’s also an area rich in talent. The history of the club shows what happens when you believe – and invest– in its young people. The club has the support and the trust of the community, but now we’re asking for funding bodies, businesses and philanthropists to join us in ‘paying it forward’ - quite literally we’re looking for any and all help in laying the foundations to ensure we continue to maximise the opportunities for future generations too.

The club isn’t just about producing talented athletes, it helps produce well-rounded, confident, young people, who are well equipped to contribute to the community.

Quite simply, if you can’t stand for a community club with a demonstrable record of inclusion, success, inspirational volunteers and young people since 1946 – what do you stand for?”
